CFRP Propeller

Nakashima Propeller succeeded in developing the world’s first CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) propeller for general commercial vessels.

The most notable features—"high efficiency" and "quiet operation"—are performances achieved by fully utilizing the material characteristics, and are expected to improve onboard comfort through high noise suppression and low vibration. In 2015, Nakashima received the Prime Minister’s Award at the 6th Monodzukuri Nippon Grand Awards for “the development of the world’s first carbon fiber reinforced plastic propeller for commercial vessels that achieves energy savings.” Furthermore, to ensure safe and reliable products, a large-scale X-ray CT inspection system was introduced in 2017 for non-destructive testing.

Features of CFRP Propeller

① Lightweight
・About 1/5 the specific gravity of conventional copper alloy, making installation easier
・Reduction in moment of inertia and lighter shafting system

② High Strength
・Higher fatigue strength than conventional materials, offering greater reliability

③ Low Vibration
・Reduced vibration due to lighter weight and high damping characteristics
・Improved onboard living environment

④ Overload Reduction
・Blade shape deforms to match water flow, reducing overload during rough sea conditions

⑤ High Efficiency
・Larger diameter can be achieved due to weight reduction, improving propeller performance
・Suppresses cavitation generation

⑥ Improved Maintainability
・Quick response to damage by stocking spare blades
・No special expertise required for replacement, and repairs are also possible

Large-Scale X-ray CT Scanning System

As part of our development and production of CFRP propellers, we introduced one of the world’s largest X-ray CT scanning systems—an essential technology for detecting internal defects and ensuring quality.

Currently, we also offer CT scanning services not only for propellers but for a wide range of applications, including research, inspection, and cultural heritage analysis.
