Azimuth Thruster

With increasing environmental awareness, electric propulsion systems are gaining attention. Nakashima Propeller has developed the Tandem CRP Propulsion System and the Contra-Rotating Propeller Type Azimuth Thruster.
Tandem CRP Propulsion System
The Tandem CRP Propulsion System places an azimuth thruster, functioning as a rudder, behind a conventional controllable pitch propeller. By rotating each propeller in opposite directions, a contra-rotating propeller configuration is formed.
This setup allows the aft azimuth propeller to recover the swirl energy generated by the forward propeller, improving overall propulsion efficiency.
Redundancy is enhanced by having a dual propulsion setup, and the azimuth thruster can generate thrust in any direction within 360 degrees, significantly improving maneuverability.
This system is particularly effective for coastal vessels that frequently enter and leave port.
In the hybrid type, the forward propeller is driven by a diesel engine and the aft azimuth thruster by an electric motor. Compared to a fully electric propulsion system, this reduces energy loss from electric conversion.
Note: CRP stands for Contra-Rotating Propeller.

Contra-Rotating Propeller Type Azimuth Propulsion System
We have developed a new system combining azimuth thrusters with contra-rotating propellers to greatly enhance vessel maneuverability.
Two propellers are arranged on the same shaft and rotate in opposite directions, allowing the aft propeller to recover the swirl flow generated by the forward propeller. This reduces energy loss and improves the standalone efficiency of the propellers.
