A New Concept Specifically Designed for 499 G/T Domestic Vessels

Nakashima Propeller, which has long supported logistics by “optimizing propulsion performance,” recognizes thrusters as an essential propulsion device. To address various challenges in the domestic shipping industry, we contribute to safe ship operations and reduced environmental impact. STEER-JET is a compact, fully rotatable jet-type thruster independently developed for 499 G/T domestic cargo vessels, with future potential for automated berthing and unberthing.

Enhanced Safety (Reduced Risk of Foreign Object Ingestion)

One of the common troubles with tunnel-type thrusters is the ingestion of floating objects. STEER-JET, however, intakes seawater from the bottom of the hull instead of the sides, significantly reducing the risk of ingesting floating debris such as ropes or driftwood.

Reduced Berthing/Unberthing Time and Automation

With a fully rotatable nozzle generating thrust in all 360° directions, STEER-JET enables lateral movement when linked with the rudder. This next-generation thruster contributes to shorter berthing/unberthing times through improved maneuverability and supports the realization of automated docking operations.

Compact Design

Conventional jet-type thrusters we handled, such as pump jets, had wide widths and could not be fitted in the bow section of 499 G/T cargo vessels. STEER-JET features a compact structure suitable for installation in the bow, providing optimal thrust for 499 G/T cargo vessels.

No Need for Ballast Adjustment

Tunnel-type thrusters require the tunnel section to be fully submerged. Since STEER-JET draws seawater from the hull bottom, ballast control is not needed, contributing to shorter departure preparation time.

No Risk of Oil Leakage into Seawater

The system is designed to prevent lubricating oil inside the gearbox from leaking into the seawater. A backup seal is installed, allowing prompt response in case of emergency without waiting for a manufacturer’s service visit.

Improved Propulsion Performance

While tunnel-type thrusters create resistance during navigation due to openings on the hull sides, STEER-JET is installed on the hull bottom, resulting in significantly lower resistance and an improvement in propulsion performance by 12%.
