Main propulsion systems Electric propulsion systems

As environmental awareness grows, electric propulsion systems are beginning to attract attention. Different from internal combustion engines, in electric propulsion systems, energy is created by an electric generator and electric motor that rotate the propeller and obtain thrust force. These next-generation ecologically friendly propulsion systems emit significantly less CO2.

Contra-Rotating POD Propulsion System

Contra-Rotating POD Propulsion System

As environmental awareness grows, electric propulsion systems are beginning to attract more attention. Nakashima Propeller develops these systems and has already achieved significant sales results with them. Using contra-rotating propellers allows for propulsion systems that are highly efficient and more environmentally-friendly.
Contra-rotating propellers are two propellers located on the same axis and that rotate in opposite directions. This type of system makes each propeller more efficient than regular propellers.
Nakashima Propeller has developed a system of rotatable propulsion equipment (POD propeller) which combines contra-rotating propellers to dramatically improve ship maneuverability.

Features
  • Contra-rotating propellers allow recovery of rotational energy and dispersion of load, achieving higher propulsion efficiency compared to regular rotatable PODs.
  • Since the POD propulsion system can be rotated a full 360 degrees, it can be used as a powerful side thruster to dramatically improve maneuverability during low-speed operation while in port.
  • Installation is easy because most of the rotatable drive system and the drive shaft system for power transmission, both of which form the rudder mechanism, are incorporated snugly into the POD. Since it requires only a small space for installation, inner vessel space is maximized.
  • POD propulsion system is usually used in twin-screw vessels. Having two independent propulsion systems and rudder systems enhances redundancy in the event of an emergency.
